The Lion King Who Started It All

1. 0:06Every great ruler is born into a story that was already old. In Mali, that story begins not with a king, it begins with a voice. The griot stands at the center of the court and speaks a name, not reads it, speaks it.
2. 0:22In the Mandé world, history is not paper, it is breath, it is performance, it is a living man who carries the past inside him and releases it into the room like fire.
3. 0:34The name he speaks is Sundiata, >> [music] >> and before there was Mansa Musa, before there was an empire of gold, before any of the events this series will follow, [music] there was this man, a founder, a legend, the lion of Mali.
4. 0:51The story of Sundiata begins [music] in difficulty. He was born to a king and a woman named Sogolon, who was called ugly, who was called [music] cursed, and who was said to carry in her the fate of an empire. The diviners had spoken.
5. 1:06"This child," they said, "would one day swallow the world." But the child could not walk. For years he crawled. His legs would not hold him. His half brothers mocked him. [music] His mother endured humiliation at court while her son lay
6. 1:22in the dust. And then one day he stood.
7. 1:25The story says [music] he gripped a rod of iron. The story says the iron bent.
8. 1:30Whatever the truth of the details, this is what the griots have kept for eight centuries.
9. 1:35>> [music] >> A boy who was written off, who rose, and who changed everything when the king died and rivals moved against Sogolon's son. She took him and fled. The exile lasted years. They crossed hostile kingdoms. They ate at the mercy of
10. 1:51strangers. Sundiata grew in the wilderness, watching, learning, building the kind of patience that only exile teaches.
11. 2:00But he did not disappear. He gathered.
12. 2:03>> [music] >> Hunters came to him. Blacksmiths came to him. Farmers came to him. Men who owed nothing to the old power structures of his enemies were exactly the men who would fight for something new.
13. 2:15Around 1235, Sundiata marched home. At the Battle of Karina, he broke the Sosso king Sumanguru Kante, the man who had conquered and humiliated the Mandé people, and he rebuilt the world on his terms. The world he built was not held
14. 2:31together by force alone. It was held together by a cosmological order so old that no one alive could remember a time before it. The Mandé called it Nyama.
15. 2:42Every living thing has it. Every act of transformation [music] releases it. The blacksmith who draws iron out of earth is not just a craftsman. He is a mediator between the human world and the forces that run beneath it.
16. 2:56>> [music] >> His caste is feared and respected across the empire. The hunter walks the edge of the village and the wild. He understands [music] boundaries. He carries power objects that protect against what no sword can reach. The diviner reads what
17. 3:12others cannot see. He consults forces that predate the empire. Even kings come to him. And the griot. [music] The griot does not only remember the past. He is the past. [music] His voice is the instrument through which the dead
18. 3:26continue to speak. A griot who has memorized the lineage of a ruling family is carrying [music] a political document that no fire can destroy. Into this world, a boy named Musa Keita was born.
19. 3:39He was not yet mansa.
20. 3:41>> [music] >> He was not yet anything the wider world would ever hear about. He was a child in a Niani palace, listening, listening to griots recite the battles and alliances [music] of his ancestors, listening to scholars debate the meaning of the Quran
21. 3:56and the administration of trade, listening to the court around him negotiate the endless, invisible work of empire.
22. 4:04>> [music] >> He did not choose this inheritance. No one asked him. The dynasty had been building for generations before he arrived. Sundiata was already a legend.
23. 4:14The sacred roles were already ancient.
24. 4:17The gold was already [music] flowing.
25. 4:19All of it was waiting.
26. 4:21And a boy with serious eyes >> [music] >> and a weight he could not yet name was slowly, quietly becoming the man who would carry it to the world.
