3. 0:35Europeans called them Amazon because empire prefers Greek myth to African [music] institutions. Prefer the fawn name. The myth label was always a failure of imagination and a way to make real women sound like travelers [music]
4. 0:49entertainment. This is the kingdom of Dome, present-day Benin, capital at Abome, Bas relief [music] palace walls carved with fawn power, a militarized state that expanded through war and through [music] the Atlantic slave trade. That last fact is not a footnote
5. 1:06you tuck under the bravery. [music] It is the economic and moral weather of their world. The Agog [music] served kings who sold captives. Honesty is not optional here. Formidable soldiers, complicated kingdom, both true at once.
6. 1:21Founding dates are contested. 17th century in some tellings, [music] early 18th in others, palace guard origins, elephant hunter traditions, contested beginnings, confirmed existence. By the early 1700s, they appear as palace power. And by the 19th

16. 3:15French officers wrote them into afteraction reports like [music] a tactical problem. Benin remembers them as ancestors of a military tradition [music] that was never supposed to exist according to European gender rules. All
17. 3:28three archives matter. None of them get to own the whole story alone. The agogi also force a harder honesty about Dome itself. A kingdom can produce extraordinary women soldiers and still participate in the machinery [music] of
18. 3:42the Atlantic trade. Soft history wants one or the other. This series will keep both in frame because African history is not a costume for [music] innocence or for shame. It is a record of power under pressure. What remains is an
19. 3:56uncomfortable lesson this series [music] will not soften. African military history includes women who were professionals and kingdoms whose power was [music] entangled with the trade in human beings. The Igogi force both truths into the same frame. That is why
20. 4:11they open season 2, not as fantasy Amazon, as soldiers whose story [music] refuses simplification.
