The King Who Won at Isandlwana

1. 0:06January 22nd, 1879.
2. 0:09By sundown, a British imperial column is gone. Not delayed, not bloodied, destroyed. Roughly, 1300 British and Allied soldiers dead in a single afternoon on the plane under Isandana, the sphinx-shaped hill that still looks like it is waiting for the next bad
3. 0:28decision. It remains the largest military defeat African arms ever inflicted on the British Empire in the field. Confirmed scale, confirmed shame in London, confirmed myth that African spears could not break a modern army.
4. 0:43The man who built the army that broke it is Kachuo Campande, last of the great independent Zulu kings, confirmed reign from 1872.
5. 0:53Heir to Shaka's Ibuto system, age regiments, drill, discipline, the chest and horns encirclement that turns open ground into a trap. Setuayo does not invent Zulu war. He keeps it sharp when empire assumes it has gone soft.
6. 1:10December 1878, British ultimatum, impossible demands, a paper war that is already a real war, confirmed. Chelmsford's columns enter Zuluand, certain that tents and Martini Henry rifles make them immune to a kingdom that still fights on foot. Ice
7. 1:29Lana, the British camp sits unfortified.
8. 1:32No proper laga. Chermsford rides out with much of the force. Netam Suo Kamahole and Mavanguana Candala named commanders bring the main imp,000 warriors is the order of magnitude tradition and reconstruction give us treat the round number as scale the
9. 1:51formation is classic is impondo Zankmore chest and horns the horns close the camp collapses spears and captured rifles finish what arrogance started the same day rocks drift a smaller Zulu Contingent hits the mission station. 139
10. 2:09British hold through the night against thousands. Confirmed garrison size.
11. 2:14Confirmed British medal factory afterward. Do not let that overnight defense erase the afternoon strategic fact. The Empire's invasion column died under the hill. Setuo seeks peace after the victory. Overtures ignored.
12. 2:29Confirmed pattern. London does not negotiate from a wound that deep. July 4th, 1879.
13. 2:37Ulundi, reinforced British square, gatling guns. The charge breaks. Setuo flees. Is captured. Shipped to Cape Town, then London. He meets Queen Victoria in 1882. Partial restoration in 1883, dead by 1884.
14. 2:56Confirmed ark, tactical brilliance that buys a day of glory and a short remainder of sovereignty. What remains is season 4's opening thesis. African military genius is not folklore. It is formation, logistics, and timing that
15. 3:12can smash a European field force and still lose the war when the other side can replace an army and you cannot replace a kingdom. Seto knew they would come back with more. He fought anyway.
16. 3:24Isandana is not a romantic last stand for Britain. It is a staff failure under a hill that Zulu commanders read better than Chumsford did. Open camp, split force, underestimated enemy. African Generalship punished those errors in
17. 3:40real time. When later films fetishize Rock's drift, they are choosing a story London could decorate with medals.
18. 3:47Season 4 starts with the afternoon London tried to forget. The day an African army erased a British field column and proved the scramble was never a walkover.
19. 3:58royal crawl is the other visual of this war. Beehive order, cattle wealth, a state that could feed an empire.
20. 4:05Satsuo's tragedy is not ignorance. It is asymmetry of replacement. Britain can lose a column and print another. Zuluand cannot lose a generation of trained men and print another Shaka system overnight. Season 4 begins with the
21. 4:21afternoon that embarrassed an empire and with the king who understood the sequel would be uglier. Hold both. The victory under the Sphinx Hill and the knowledge that victory was never going to be enough. Next time, Samori Toué, the
