Moremi Ajasoro: The Spy Who Saved Ile-Ife

1. 0:06This is a story from Yoruba oral tradition. The specific events and the historical Moremi >> [music] >> cannot be verified by written sources the way Nianda's scaffold can. What is true is that Yoruba [music] people have been telling this story for centuries,
2. 0:21that her annual Edi festival has never stopped, and that the meaning of what she is said to have done still carries weight in Ile-Ife today.
3. 0:30>> [music] >> This is how the tradition tells it.
4. 0:32Ile-Ife, sacred city of Yoruba origin, present-day Osun State, [music] Nigeria.
5. 0:38Red laterite, sacred groves, ancient stone pavements, raiders from the Igbo, identity varies by telling, terrorize the city. In some versions, they seem like forest spirits. The tradition says their power was costume [music] and fear, raffia that made them look
6. 0:55supernatural.
7. 0:57Moremi Ajasoro, noble woman of Ile-Ife, vows to the Asamirin river spirit that she will pay any price if she can save her people. Then she does something intelligence officers [music] still recognize. She allows herself to be
8. 1:12captured. She becomes a wife of the Igbo king. She learns the secret that fire [music] destroys the raffia, that the monsters are men in masks of leaf and stalk. She escapes. She returns.
9. 1:24>> [music] >> Ile-Ife arms itself with knowledge and defeats the raiders. Then comes the price. The river spirit [music] demands her only son, Oluorogbo. The tradition says she pays. That sacrifice is the emotional center of the story, not a
10. 1:40tidy victory speech, a wound that founds remembrance. The Edi festival commemorates her. A statue stands in Ile-Ife, confirmed festival, confirmed living memory, legendary personhood.
11. 1:54Say it carefully. We are not pretending this is a court transcript. We are telling a story of people [music] kept alive because it teaches what courage costs when the city is sacred and the price is personal. Spycraft, fire, a
12. 2:08mother's impossible [music] bargain.
13. 2:10Yoruba memory chose not to forget her.
14. 2:13Ilé-Ifè's pavements and groves still carry sacred weight in Yoruba life. The Edi Festival is not a tourist afterthought invented for cameras. It is living ritual memory.
15. 2:24When we say Moremi saved the city, we are speaking the tradition's grammar.
16. 2:29Intelligence, infiltration, fire against [music] costume terror, and a vow that collected its debt in the cruelest currency. Modern audiences want heroes without blood prices. Oral tradition often refuses that comfort. Moremi's story is celebrated because it is
17. 2:46terrible [music] and useful at once. It teaches vigilance, sacrifice, and the [music] idea that a woman's cunning can outthink an army of fear. Dramatic interpretation, cultural truth, >> [music] >> both labels apply. What remains is not a
18. 3:01museum object under glass. It is a festival that still [music] happens, proof that oral tradition can outlast empires that never bothered to write her down. If this series only told verified court cases, Yoruba sacred history would
19. 3:15be silenced by the accident of who kept paper.
20. 3:19We refuse [music] that silence. We label the genre. We keep the festival. We let Moremi's cunning stand [music] as the tradition intends, as a woman's war fought with patience, infiltration, [music] and a debt that never stops echoing.
21. 3:34The Ugbo identity itself shifts across tellings, sometimes named Igbo, sometimes left deliberately ambiguous.
22. 3:41>> [music] >> That variance is not a production failure. It is how oral tradition travels. What stays stable is the structure. Terror at the gates, a woman who enters the enemy's house, [music] a secret of costume and fire, a city
23. 3:55saved, a child demanded, stability of meaning across unstable details is how legends work. Next time, Manthatisi, the regent who kept a people alive when Southern Africa came apart.
