The Empire of Gold

1. 0:06Two substances ruled the medieval world.
2. 0:08[music] One came from the earth in rivers of light. The other was hewn from mines buried in the Sahara, traded block by block [music] like currency.
3. 0:17In the 14th century, one empire controlled both. The world did not go to Mali. Mali came to the world. The gold fields of Bambuk and Bure were the best-kept secret in the medieval economy. [music] Free Mandé farmers worked the riverbeds after the rains,
4. 0:33washing gold from gravel and soil. The merchants who came to trade [music] never saw their faces. Arab geographers wrote of a system that left them baffled, a silent barter. Traders left goods on the bank and walked away. When
5. 0:47they returned, gold dust had appeared in their place. No language, no faces, no map. The location of the mines was protected by silence itself. The Mansa knew where the gold was. He made sure everyone else did not. By law, every
6. 1:04gold nugget found in the empire belonged to him. Merchants could trade the dust.
7. 1:09The nuggets, the heavy ones, the ones that announced [music] themselves as something more than currency, those went to the throne. 1,000 km north, in the deep Sahara, was a place called Taghaza.
8. 1:21There was nothing there. No trees, no water, no earth to build with.
9. 1:27So they built with salt. The walls of the buildings were salt blocks. The roofs were held up by salt beams. The workers who mined the salt were enslaved. They carved the [music] substance that kept the rest of the medieval world alive. They ate food
10. 1:41brought by merchants because nothing grew there.
11. 1:45When the caravans stopped coming, so did the food. They could not leave. In sub-Saharan Africa, salt was so scarce that in some markets it traded weight for weight against gold.
12. 1:57The Mali Empire controlled the salt mines of the north and the gold fields of the south. That was the engine. Gold and salt flowing in opposite directions through the same caravans. The crossing took 70 days. Caravans numbered in the
13. 2:12thousands. Merchants, guards, porters, camels loaded with salt going south and gold dust going north. The experienced travelers navigated [music] by stars.
14. 2:22The inexperienced ones left their bones.
15. 2:24Ibn Battuta, crossing in 1352, noted the remains of men and animals still lying on the road where they had fallen. The desert did not hide them. At the end of the crossing stood Timbuktu, the point where the Sahara ended and the
16. 2:39Niger River began. Not just a city, a lung. The place where the trade of two worlds exhaled and changed hands. Mali produced an estimated half of the old world's gold supply in this century. The gold florin of Florence, >> [music]
17. 2:54>> the coins of medieval European kingdoms, the currency of Cairo and Baghdad. All of it began in West African earth. Gold mined in Guinea, carried across the Sahara, sold in Egypt, minted in Italy, spent by a banker who had never heard the name Mali.
18. 3:11Gold was not only money. In Mande tradition, gold carried the force of the sun, sacred, alive, kingly. Goldsmiths, called jago, held a special [music] caste. Their work was considered semi-magical.
19. 3:26The king wore gold not as decorations, but as spiritual armor, amplifying the divine power that kingship required.
20. 3:34Mansa Musa was a devout Muslim. Friday prayers, Ramadan, Quranic study. Islamic scholars held court at Niani. Arabic was the language of law and administration, but the court was not only Islamic. Diviners [music] were present, too. Every major decision,
21. 3:52a campaign, a succession question, a question of harvest was brought to them.
22. 3:57They read the signs. They spoke to what the Imams could not reach. When Ibn Battuta visited in 1352, he was scandalized.
23. 4:06Traditional ceremonies were performed alongside scripture. Women appeared unveiled. The old world and the new world shared the same room. Musa did not see a contradiction. He held a complete world. Gold from Guinea carried north by caravan, >> [music]
24. 4:22>> sold in Timbuktu, loaded onto ships in Egypt, minted in Florence, spent on a Venetian merchant's silk. One empire invisible at the center of the medieval world's economy. The Mansa counted his gold and the world turned.
