Ranavalona I: The Queen Who Closed Madagascar

1. 0:06Europe was carving the world into property.
2. 0:08>> [music] >> Madagascar watched the ships come closer. Missionaries with Bibles, merchants with contracts, navies [music] with polite threats dressed as diplomacy. Highland ridges above Antananarivo, red earth, a palace complex that was not waiting to become
3. 0:23someone else's footnote. And a Merina queen decided the island would not be an easy signature. Her name is Ranavalona I, queen of the Highland kingdom centered on Antananarivo. She ruled from 1828 to 1861.
4. 0:3833 years of telling Europe to wait outside. [music] Colonial writers called her monster.
5. 0:44Malagasy politics called her sovereign.
6. 0:46Missionary print called her a dark age.
7. 0:49Palace memory called her continuity.
8. 0:51>> [music] >> This episode will not flatten either truth into a slogan. Severity happened.
9. 0:56Sovereignty happened. Propaganda happened louder than both. She took power after Radama died. A contested succession. Rivals circling. Factions
10. 1:06[music]
11. 1:06smelling weakness the way empires smell ports. Radama had opened doors to British missionaries and modernizing bargains, guns, schools, treaties that looked like friendship and behaved like leverage. Ranavalona closed those doors.
12. 1:22Not because she feared books, because she recognized a pattern [music] that West Africa and the Sahel already knew by blood. First the chapel, then the concession, then the flag. In 1835, she issued edicts against Christian practice
13. 1:37and expelled [music] French and British missionaries. Malagasy Christians who refused faced [music] trial and punishment. European sources inflate body counts like propaganda always does.
14. 1:48Numbers designed to travel [music] farther than context. Contested scale.
15. 1:52Confirmed policy. We will not deny the severity to make her tidy for modern comfort, and we will not let colonial adjectives do our thinking. A queen defending an island's [music] political religion is not the same thing as a cartoon villain invented for
16. 2:07metropolitan pop. Then came the test Europe understood better than theology, guns at the coast. In 1845, [music] a joint French-British naval force tried to force Madagascar's ports open at Foulpointe. Frigates on the horizon, coastal batteries answering.
17. 2:24Ranavalona's [music] forces defeated and repelled the assault. Read that carefully, a 19th century African kingdom turned back a combined European fleet attempt. That fact was [music] inconvenient for empire storytelling, so it often vanishes from the soft
18. 2:39histories, the ones that prefer missionaries as heroes and African queens as weather. She kept the island independent for decades, longer than most African [music] polities managed against the accelerating scramble.
19. 2:52Independence was not a mood, it was logistics, fear, courts, [music] coastal watch, and a refusal to sell the calendar. In 1857, she crushed the Lambert Charter Plot, a French merchant scheme tangled with palace intrigue, [music] including contested involvement
20. 3:08by her own son, the future Radama II.
21. 3:11Contested. What is not contested? She survived the conspiracy. The concession hunters did not get their island on paper that [music] year. Europe had to wait. In 1861, she died at about 83. Her son reversed course almost immediately,
22. 3:27reopened doors, restored European [music] access, granted what she had blocked. France would colonize Madagascar in 1896, 35 years after [music] her death. Timing matters. Her reign was not eternal independence. It was a generation stolen [music] back
23. 3:44from the timetable of empire, 33 years in which Madagascar was not yet someone else's colony >> [music] >> because a queen decided the ships could see the coast without owning the highland. What remains is argument, cruelty, sovereignty, faith, [music]
24. 3:59force, and a queen who proved an island could say no long enough to matter. Not forever, [music] long enough. Next time, Saruniya Mangu of Lugu, the spirit the French column could not capture.
