10. 1:25Newspapers across Europe publish the evidence. The Portuguese government scrambles to deny, but the photographs don't lie. 400 lives erased. And in the jungle, Samura Michelle makes a vow.
11. 1:40Portugal will pay for every single life.
12. 1:42To understand why Muel fights, you need to understand what 500 years of colonialism does to a people. 1498 Portuguese explorer Vasco Dagama lands on Mosan Beek's coast. He came looking for trade routes to India. Portugal never leaves. For five centuries, they
13. 2:01extract [music] everything. Gold, ivory, enslaved people and labor. By the 1960s, the numbers tell the story. 97% of Mozambicans are illiterate. Life expectancy is 38 years. Forced labor, they call it Chibala, is slavery with a different name. Portugal calls

24. 3:50Fimmo launches coordinated attacks across northern Mozambique. They have 250 fighters. Portugal sends 20,000 troops, growing to 70,000. [music] Helicopters against guerrillas. Napal against machetes. The odds are impossible, but Fimmore has something
25. 4:08Portugal doesn't. The people. And the people are angry. Felimo doesn't just fight. They govern. In northern Mozambique, guerrilla fighters create liberated zones, territory free from Portuguese [music] control. And inside these zones, they build the future

42. 7:09crush flemo in 6 months. The Ariyaga declares he will destroy the terrorists once and for all. He is wrong. But Fimo doesn't fight conventionally. They vanish into forests, into villages, into the population. Portuguese soldiers
43. 7:24[music] control roads by day. Filimo controls everything else by night. 6 months pass, then a year. Operation Gordian knot collapses. Portugal controls nothing but cities and military outposts. The empire cannot defeat ghosts. And the ghosts are getting
44. 7:42stronger.
45. 7:46Portugal isn't just losing in Mozambique. They're fighting three colonial wars simultaneously. Angola, Guinea, Bisau, Mozambique. The cost is staggering. 40% of the national budget consumed by war. Over 11,000 Portuguese soldiers dead across all three fronts.

52. 9:26And as they leave, they sabotage, destroy equipment, pour concrete down elevator shafts. If we can't have it, no one will. That is the settler's farewell. They destroy what they cannot take. Factories stripped, hospitals emptied, infrastructure sabotaged, five
53. 9:45centuries of extraction, and in the final act, one last theft, destroying everything they built with no zombie labor. But Fimmo doesn't care.
54. 9:55Liberation matters [music] more than infrastructure. Buildings can be rebuilt. Dignity cannot be stolen again.
55. 10:02Fimmo soldiers enter Maputo peacefully.
56. 10:06No revenge, no looting. Disciplined columns marched through streets that Portuguese [music] colonizers walked for nearly five centuries. Mozan beacons line the roads, cheering, weeping, [music] reaching out to touch the fighters who brought them

70. 12:56from nothing, is gone at age 53, but his legacy cannot be killed. Mosambique survives the civil war. Democracy emerges. The nation Michelle dreamed of endures.
71. 13:11Fimo's victory sent shock waves across the continent. Angola gained independence the same year 1975.
72. 13:18Zimbabwe followed [crying] in 1980, Namibia in 1990. And in 1994, apartheid South Africa finally fell. Muel's strategy building a nation while fighting for liberation became the template. Not just military victory, social transformation, education as a
73. 13:37weapon, the people as the foundation.
74. 13:39Today, Mosmbique is a peaceful democracy. Maputo's skyline rises where Portuguese colonial buildings once stood. The country faces enormous challenges. Poverty, climate change,
75. 13:51[music]
76. 13:51insurgency in the north. But Mosmbique is free from 500 years of chains to a sovereign [music] nation in one generation. The legacy of Felimo's liberated zones lives in every school, every clinic, every free citizen. Samura

78. 14:11Liberation isn't just military victory.
79. 14:14It's building a new world while tearing down the old one. A nurse with a fourth grade education became one of Africa's greatest leaders. He showed that revolution is about what you create, not just what you destroy. Schools in war
80. 14:27zones, clinics under fire, a nation born fighting. June 25th remains Mosambique's Independence Day. The same date Fimmore was founded 13 years earlier. From the founding of a movement to the birth of a nation on the exact same day Mel's words
81. 14:44still echo across the country. Aluta continua. The struggle continues for justice, for equality, for the Mosambique that Samura Mckel imagined.
82. 14:56From nurse to revolutionary to president, Samura Mckel and Felimo proved that 500 years of colonialism could be broken in 11 years of struggle.
83. 15:07Mosambique belongs to Mozambicans. The fight for freedom continues. Next on the Independence Files, Angola, three armies, one country, all declare independence on the same day, and the Cold War turns it into a battlefield.
