Yaa Asantewaa: The Last Stand of the Golden Stool

1. 0:06The Chiefs would not look at each other.
2. 0:08Their king was already gone. Asantehene Prempeh I shipped to the Seychelles in 1896 like cargo with a title. [music] Senior Chiefs went with him. British stone sat inside Kumasi like a foreign tooth in a sacred mouth and still the
3. 0:23men hesitated. Then an older woman stood, Queen mother of Ejisu, kente on her shoulders, gold on her wrists, >> [music] >> a rifle in the story that Ashanti memory refuses to forget. Tradition says she told them, "If you will not fight, we
4. 0:38the women will." Treat the exact wording [music] carefully. Oral memory confirms the confrontation. Verbatim scripts disagree. The event does not need inventing. Her name is Yaa Asantewaa, present-day Ghana, Ashanti Confederacy,
5. 0:53a queen mother inside a political system where sacred kingship and military confederacy were not European toys [music] to be audited into obedience. In 1896 thought exile would finish the job.
6. 1:06Remove the king and the confederacy becomes paperwork. That is how you try [music] to kill a state without admitting you are still at war. What they underestimated was the office of Queen mother [music] and a woman willing to turn grief into command. Then came
7. 1:21the insult that made war inevitable. In 1900, Governor Frederick Hodgson arrived in Kumasi and demanded [music] the golden stool, the sacred embodiment of Ashanti sovereignty, so he could sit on it. Sit on it. In Ashanti tradition,
8. 1:37that demand is not diplomacy. It is desecration spoken aloud in the capital.
9. 1:42The golden stool is not furniture. It is not a trophy. It is not something you place on the bare earth like luggage. It is carried, suspended, guarded above [music] the ground, never offered as a chair for empire. This series will not
10. 1:56show it otherwise. Yaa Asantewaa answered the vacuum with command. Oral tradition remembers her speech shaming hesitation into motion. British colonial records remember what followed in ledgers and casualty lists. The War of
11. 2:10the Golden Stool, also called the Yaa Asantewaa War, a rising that pulled Ashanti fighters into months of siege around the British fort at Kumasi. Smoke against whitewashed colonial walls.
12. 2:22[music]
13. 2:23Forest paths feeding fighters into the city. A garrison holding on while the [music] confederacy tried to choke foreign stone out of sacred ground. She did not command from a curtain line. She coordinated resistance the way a queen
14. 2:37mother who has outlived soft options commands, with urgency and with contempt for cowardice dressed as prudence.
15. 2:44British reinforcements eventually broke the siege. The war spilled into the bush, guerrilla months of rainforest and red earth. Then capture. [music] Then exile. Again the Seychelles, empire's favorite pattern. Remove the person,
16. 2:59claim the land is quiet. She never returned home. In 1921 [music] she died in exile at about 81 years old. But listen to what did not happen. The Golden Stool was never surrendered.
17. 3:12Empire could exile a queen mother. It could not sit itself into Ashanti sovereignty. What remains is a name Ghana still teaches [music] in classrooms and commemorations, and a hard lesson for every episode after this one.
18. 3:25Sacred centers are strategic centers.
19. 3:28Insult them [music] and you do not get a bargain.
20. 3:31You get a war that outlives the governor who thought a stool was a chair. Prempeh has exile as the fuse. Hodgson's demand is the spark. Yaa Asantewaa is the fire.
21. 3:42Season 1 needs that sequence clear.
22. 3:44Empire removes a king and still meets a queen mother who will not let the confederacy die politely. British medals and Ashanti memory tell different halves of the same siege. Hold both without letting London's overnight myths erase
23. 3:58months of rainforest war. The Seychelles again. Prempeh has island, [music] then hers. Colonial geography of disappearance. She dies there. The stool does not. That asymmetry is the episode's last frame. A body in exile, a
24. 4:14sovereignty that refused to sit [music] down for empire. Next time, Amanirenas of Kush, the one-eyed Kandake [music] who made Rome bury its pride under her doorstep.
