The Orisha: West Africa's Gods That Survived Slavery

1. 0:00In a small room in Havana, candles flicker before images of saints. But look closer. These aren't just Catholic prayers. This is Santa Ya. And those saints, they're hiding something older.
2. 0:12Something that survived the middle passage. West African gods who refuse to die. How do gods cross an ocean in chains? How does faith survive when everything else is stripped away? This is the story of the Orisha, the deities of the Yoruba people. Today over 50
3. 0:30million people across three continents worship them. Before the slave ships, the Euraba kingdoms of West Africa thrived. In what is now Nigeria and Benin, great cities rose. Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee >> Benning City. And at the heart of these
4. 0:52civilizations, a pantheon of gods who controlled the forces of nature. The Orisha aren't distant. abstract beings.
5. 0:59They walk among us. They feel, they love, they rage. Each one governs a specific force. Thunder, rivers, iron, the ocean, and each demands respect, offerings, devotion. Let me introduce you. Shango is the god of thunder, fire,
6. 1:17and justice. Once a mortal king of Oyo, he became divine through his power. When lightning strikes, that's Shango's anger. His colors are red and white. is sacred number six. He punishes liars and protects the truthful. Oshoun is the
7. 1:33goddess of sweet waters, rivers, streams, fertility. She is beauty, love, and sensuality embodied. Her color is gold, her symbol, the mirror. Without Oshune, nothing grows. She is life itself flowing through the world, nurturing all who honor her. Oan is the
8. 1:51master of iron, war, and technology.
9. 1:54Blacksmiths worship him. Soldiers call on him. Every knife, every nail, every tool forged from metal. That's Oan's domain. His color is green. His offering, rum and cigars. Civilization itself rests on his strength. Yumoja is
10. 2:10the mother of all Orisha, goddess of the ocean, and motherhood itself. She is the womb from which all life emerged. Her waters are deep, protective, and unforgiving. Sailors pray to her.
11. 2:22Sailors pray to her. Mothers call her name. She is the origin. Then came the catastrophe. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, millions of West Africans were kidnapped. Euroba people among them, chained, branded, shipped across
12. 2:38the Atlantic in conditions designed to break not just bodies, but spirits.
13. 2:43Everything was taken except faith. How do you practice a religion when it's forbidden? When your language is banned?
14. 2:50When you're baptized by force into Christianity? When the penalty for praying to your gods is death, the Euroba people faced an impossible choice. Abandon their gods or die. They chose neither. Instead, they hid. Not physically, spiritually. They looked at
15. 3:06the Catholic saints their enslavers worshiped and saw something brilliant.
16. 3:10These saints had stories, horrors, symbols. What if the Arishia could hide behind the saints? What if they could worship both? This wasn't surrendered.
17. 3:20This was survival through genius.
18. 3:22Synretism by the blending of religions.
19. 3:25Shango became St. Barbara. Both associated with thunder and war. Ashune became our lady of charity. Agon became St. Peter. The prayers looked Christian but the spirit beneath pure Yoruba. In Cuba, this fusion became centuria.
20. 3:41Enslaved Africans built altars in secret. They drumed in code. Every Catholic ceremony became a Eurora ritual in disguise. The colonizers thought they were converting heathens. They had no idea they were participating in orisha worship. In Brazil, the tradition
21. 3:58evolved into candle. Here the arishia were called by their African names openly. Temples called terraros were established. Initiations, rituals, I possession by the gods. Brazilian kingdom blé became one of the most visible African religions in the
22. 4:14Americas. In Haiti, the Orisha merged with spirits called Lowa in Vodu. This wasn't just religion, it was revolution.
23. 4:23The Haitian Revolution, the only successful slave revolt in history, was planned in Bodo ceremonies. The Orisha didn't just survive, they liberated.
24. 4:33There were no written texts. No priests could openly teach. So, how did the knowledge survive? Through oral tradition, elders whispered stories.
25. 4:43Rhythms were encoded in drums. Songs carried prayers. Every generation memorized the rituals and passed them down in secret. The bad drums of the Yoraba people are sacred instruments.
26. 4:54Each rhythm calls a specific ora.
27. 4:57Shango's rhythm is different from oceans. The enslaved couldn't write their religion down, so they drumed it.
28. 5:03The sound itself became scripture passed ear to ear. To become a priest of the orisha requires initiation, a grueling process of ritual isolation and transformation. The initiates are reborn spiritually. They receive their orisha's
29. 5:18secrets, tools, and colors. This knowledge is sacred, earned through devotion, and never shared lightly. The Catholic Church played a complicated role. Some priests genuinely believed they were saving souls. Others suspected
30. 5:31the truth, but turned a blind eye. A few even participated in orisha rituals themselves drawn by the power and community they witnessed across the Americas. An underground network formed.
31. 5:43Santos in Cuba communicated with candomlé priests in Brazil. Vodo practitioners in Haiti shared knowledge with orisher worshippers in Trinidad.
32. 5:52The diaspora built bridges. The gods connected their scattered children across the ocean. Today over 50 million people practice Arishia traditions worldwide. That's more than the population of Spain. In Cuba alone, 70% of people engage with Santa Cia to some
33. 6:09degree. In Brazil, Kandlé is recognized as an official religion. The survival is staggering. Ironically, some African descended people in the Americas are now teaching Orisha worship back to Africans in Nigeria. Christianity and Islam have
34. 6:23spread across West Africa, but diaspora communities preserved Yoruba traditions in their purest forms. The knowledge flows both ways now. Walk into a Santaia ceremony today. The altar is covered in offerings. Fruit, honey, rum, flour.
35. 6:40Thrones begin.
36. 6:43Dancers circle. Suddenly, someone gasp.
37. 6:46Their body jerks. An ora has arrived.
38. 6:50Possessing the dancer. The god speaks through them. Ancient, present, alive.
39. 6:56Possession isn't performance.
40. 6:58Practitioners describe it as overwhelming. Your consciousness stepping aside while the arishia inhabits your body. The possessed speak in voices not their own. They deliver messages, blessings, warnings. Skeptics call it performance. Believers know it's
41. 7:15real. In markets across Cuba and Brazil, you'll find stalls selling Oisha items, colored beads for each god, statues of saints with Orisha symbols hidden beneath, herbs for rituals. This isn't commercialization, it's normalization.
42. 7:31The gods live in the everyday. Orisha priests divine the future using cowry shells or palm nuts. 16 shells are cast.
43. 7:39The patterns they form reveal which Orisha is speaking and what they demand.
44. 7:44This system called ifa is thousands of years old. UNESCO recognizes it as cultural heritage. Animal sacrifice is part of arishia worship. Chickens, goats offered to the gods. This makes modern practitioners controversial. But they
45. 8:00argue how is this different from slaughter houses? At least here the animal is honored, its blood sacred, its meat shared in community feasts. In the United States, centuria practitioners have fought for religious freedom. In 1993, the Supreme Court ruled that
46. 8:15banning animal sacrifice violated the First Amendment. The Orisha won in American courts. The gods once illegal now have constitutional protection. You might not know it, but some of your favorite musicians, athletes, and actors
47. 8:28practice Santia or Kandlé. Beyonce references Oshune in her work. Certain athletes wear Oisha bead necklaces. The tradition is no longer hidden. It's proudly claimed. Oricisha worship has long welcomed LGBTQ plus individuals.
48. 8:44Some Orisha themselves defy gender norms. Oshoun can be male. Shango has feminine aspects. Priesthood isn't limited by gender identity or sexual orientation. In cultures that persecuted them, queer people found acceptance in
49. 8:59orisha communities. Each or represents a natural force. Rivers, oceans, thunder, iron. To worship them is to respect nature itself. As climate change accelerates, some practitioners see their religion as inherently ecological.
50. 9:16To harm the earth is to disrespect the gods who embody it. Orisha worship is now global. There are Santaia temples in Japan, Kendom Blé houses in Germany. The religion adapts without losing its core.
51. 9:29Japanese practitioners chant in Yoruba.
52. 9:32German initiates travel to Brazil for ceremonies. The gods cross borders willingly now. Young practitioners share rituals on YouTube. Tik Tok videos explain which orisha governs your zodiac sign. Online forums debate proper offerings. Critics worry about
53. 9:49commodification. Defenders argue the orisha have always adapted. If they survive slavery, they can survive the internet. Universities now study orisha traditions seriously. Scholars document rituals. Anthropologists trace lineages.
54. 10:04What was once dismissed as primitive superstition is recognized as a sophisticated theological system. The academy centuries late finally shows respect. In Brazil, young black activists are reclaiming candle as an act of resistance. They wear orisha
55. 10:19symbols proudly openly. They reject eurosentrism. They say our ancestors survive by hiding their faith. We survive by proclaiming it loudly. The strategy has changed. The strength hasn't. Some practitioners claim the orisha help with trauma and mental
56. 10:36health. In communities with limited access to therapy, orisha rituals provide structure, community, and spiritual release. Scientists study these effects. Whether it's psychology or divine intervention, people report feeling whole again. The survival of
57. 10:51arishia worship is one of history's greatest acts of cultural resistance.
58. 10:55Every rhythm, every prayer, every ritual is a refusal to be erased. It's proof that you can chain a body but not a soul. You can ban a language but not a belief. For millions of African descended people, orisha worship connects them to a heritage stolen by
59. 11:11slavery. It answers the question, who were we before we were enslaved? It provides identity, roots, a lineage unbroken despite centuries of violence.
60. 11:22That's priceless. Syncratism, the blending of orisha and Catholicism, teaches a powerful lesson. Culture isn't pure, it's adaptive. The Yoruba didn't preserve their religion by keeping it unchanged. They preserved it by transforming it. Rigidity would have
61. 11:38meant death. Flexibility meant survival.
62. 11:40Unlike Greek or Roman gods, the Arishia aren't museum pieces. Their worship today, right now, someone in Miami is lighting a candle for Oshune. Someone in Salvador is drumming for Shango. The gods walk among us still. That continuity is extraordinary. Other
63. 11:57colonized peoples study Oreisha's survival as a blueprint. Indigenous groups, persecuted minorities. They ask, "How did the Yoruba do it? How did they keep their gods alive when empires tried to kill them?" The answer by being smarter, more flexible, and more
64. 12:13determined. Orisha worship connects Africa to the Americas in ways politics and economics cannot. A Cuban Santara and a Nigerian Babalawo share ancestors, rituals, and gods. The Atlantic slave trade tried to sever that connection.
65. 12:28The Orishas stitched it back together spiritually. What's next for Arishia traditions? Some worry about dilution as the religion globalizes. Others see growth and vitality. The gods have survived worse than modernity. As long
66. 12:42as there are people willing to drum, pray and offer, the Arishia will endure.
67. 12:47Here's what the Arisha teach us. Power isn't permanent, but spirit is. Empires rise and fall. Slave systems crumble.
68. 12:55But the human need for meaning, connection, and the sacred, that's eternal. The Aruba understood this.
69. 13:01Their gods survive because that need survives. You can enslave a people. You can steal their land, their labor, their children. You can ban their language, and burn their books, but you cannot enslave their gods. The Arishia survived
70. 13:15the Middle Passage, not despite the brutality, but through the brilliance of faith. They're still here.
